For those who are abroad and away from our tradition of Kalag-Kalag, here are a few scenes from the Lapu-Lapu cemeteries of Humay-Humay and Menterio Municipal.
1. Typical early morning thick crowd going to the entrance of Humay-Humay cemetery
2. The early morning hot sun penetrating the crowd visiting their dear departeds
3. This year's Kalag-Kalag fell conveniently on a Sunday, so Luz and I heard mass at the cemetery chapel
4. The Amores family plot
5. The early morning crowd entering the Menterio Municipal - home to countless souls deemed not spiritually fit enough to be buried in Humay-Humay.
6. The sad remnants of Dad Clelland's mausoleum, the centerpiece of Menterio Municipal. This was a solemn place elaborately built with marbles, a cool sanctuary for us growing up in the neighborhood where we could cool off from the hot summer sun. The marbles are all gone, lost to the scavengers.
7. For a few loose change, one can stop at the palina station to shake off the confused souls clinging to one's pants or dress, on the way out...low-tech ghostbusters, if you may.
8. Scavengers show no respect, even to the dead. Elaborate security systems are installed to safeguard the remains of the loved ones.
